Ebony & Ivory

During my senior year of college, I was hired as an interning marketing director for the campus’s radio station. The tasks in which this job entailed were to stimulate an overall buzz for music and informative radio through WXAC 91.3 FM. I carried this out by designing promotional flyers to be printed and placed around campus, posting any station updates, album reviews, and upcoming events on the stations website and social media pages, all while hosting my own radio show for two hours a week.

Luckily, I was hired alongside one of my closest friends during my collegiate years, Baboucarr, as we were instantly hooked on the idea of hosting a radio show together. Soon enough, “Bobby” and I discovered how well we worked in the office and on the air.

Our show was titled "Ebony & Ivory", a play-on from the 1982 Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder hit. Every Wednesday from 10pm to midnight, Bobby and I encouraged our guests to chime in on our strange topics within world news and pop culture sparking comical yet personal conversations between ourselves and our guests. Before airtime, we published polls through our social media pages and reveal the statistics on air to reel in greater audience participation and public opinion. During commercial breaks, Bobby and I aired our pre-selected playlist of the evening which was evenly split between our favorite songs.

The formula we continuously used to produce this show and intern for the station truly brought out the “ebony and ivory” between Bobby and myself. Although we come from such diverse backgrounds, it never stopped us from being dedicated employees and co-hosts, nor did it stop us from becoming closer friends. Within our two hour time slot, we always discovered something new about each other and one can say we were living together in perfect harmony.
